In this world of closed ecosystems and vendor lock in, it's refreshing to see the call for openness moving beyond IRC and other geek conversations.
The CEO of Adventnet, which makes the Zoho online office suite, Sridhar Venbu, recently wrote a post directed at Salesforce.com and its walled garden. The gist was, Don't dictate how I run my business and I'll distribute on your platform. This is not how open business should do business -- this is the "if it benefits me I will do business with you. Show me your money and I will talk" model. Is this a long term business model? I don't think so!
And, guess what? Not only has Etelos broken down the Web app distribution wall, but we took the debris, recycled it and have built some paths that lead to customers and we built bird baths and some neat sculptures with it, too.
The Etelos Platform Suite⢠brings openness, Web application syndication and Web application distribution to developers and enterprise software vendors looking to branch into the SaaS model.
Super smash brothers
For the past few years, Etelos has been working to create a Marketplace that gives developers the freedom to be themselves. The freedom to create a great product and not worry about billing, licensing enforcement or the other nuances of running a business that distract from a primary focus on innovation.
We're now focused on bringing the vision of Marketplaces that benefit the seller to enterprise software developers and vendors, as well as the customer.
The Etelos Platform Suite provides a billing engine, tools to market the apps, a way to syndicate an app over multiple marketplaces and other tools that help break down the walls around Web application development and distribution.
The question here isn't integration. Rather, it is about being able to distribute your app as you see fit. Some platforms purposefully make it difficult to move from one platform to another. This sort of technology handcuff essentially creates a false premise of loyalty. And this is not how Etelos does business.
An important metric of business success is not having any barriers between a vendor, its innovative product and its customer. And the Etelos Platform Suite is an important tool for that success.
